Background of the Study

Family inheritance customs are a vital component of cultural identity and social organization in many communities. In Ikom, traditional inheritance practices have long governed the transfer of property and familial responsibilities, reflecting deep-rooted cultural values and social hierarchies (Nwosu, 2023). However, rapid socio-economic changes, urbanization, and legal reforms have led to evolving patterns in inheritance customs (Ekanem, 2024). This shift from customary to more modern practices raises concerns about the erosion of cultural identity and equitable asset distribution within families (Abasi, 2025). The study examines these changing patterns in Ikom, exploring the influences of modernization, economic pressures, and legal interventions, and assessing their impact on familial relationships and cultural continuity (Nwosu, 2023).

Statement of the Problem

Traditional family inheritance customs in Ikom are undergoing significant transformation due to modern influences and legal reforms, leading to conflicts and confusion within families (Ekanem, 2024). The shift in inheritance patterns has sparked debates on cultural preservation and equity in asset distribution, raising concerns about the erosion of long-standing traditions (Abasi, 2025). This study seeks to identify the drivers behind these changes and assess their implications for familial stability and cultural identity, aiming to provide recommendations that balance modern needs with traditional values (Nwosu, 2023).

Objectives of the Study:

1. To examine the evolution of family inheritance customs in Ikom.

2. To identify factors influencing changes in inheritance practices.

3. To propose strategies for preserving equitable and culturally respectful inheritance customs.

Research Questions:

1. How have family inheritance customs changed in Ikom?

2. What factors are driving these changes?

3. What measures can ensure the preservation of traditional inheritance values?

Research Hypotheses:

1. Modernization significantly alters traditional inheritance customs.

2. Economic pressures are a primary driver of changing inheritance patterns.

3. Legal reforms impact the preservation of traditional inheritance practices.

Significance of the Study

This study is significant as it explores the transformation of family inheritance customs in Ikom, providing insights into the effects of modernization on cultural traditions. The findings will assist community leaders, policymakers, and legal institutions in developing strategies that respect cultural heritage while addressing contemporary socio-economic challenges (Nwosu, 2023).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:

This study is limited to examining the changing patterns of family inheritance customs in Ikom Local Government Area, focusing solely on local cultural and legal influences.

Definitions of Terms:

1. Inheritance Customs: Traditional practices governing the transfer of family assets.

2. Modernization: The process of adopting contemporary cultural and economic practices.

3. Legal Reforms: Changes in the legal framework affecting traditional practices.
